COMMENTS FROM OUR CHAIRPERSON

It is November and if you live in the Midwest, you will find that we go from summer and shorts one day to wearing winter coats and gloves the next. There is no transition period! My hands and lips are dry the heat being on and going out into the cold. I just cut down all my tomatoes to be mulched behind the house and luckily there are still a few to eat now and some that are green and will ripen in a few days. I am not a winter person at all!

Thanks to Sharon Esmont for demonstrating Celtic knots in October. I was not able to be there, but instead spent three days at Fernwood with Jacqueline Gnott and learning watercolor techniques along with Pat West and Maureen Trubac. It was a beautiful three days and hopefully I can keep working on my watercolors as well as calligraphy, sewing, making books, etc. What did I do when I worked every day till 4 pm!

November 4 was the last MCG meeting that Sharon Esmont and I presided over. Renee Tuveson will begin her journey as President and Marty Mitchell will be Vice President for the coming year or two, or whatever they wish to do. Sharon and I have held our positions for at least 15 years or more and it was time to hand over the reins. I will be in Florida from November till February so I won't be here to conduct meetings. This does not mean that I won't be a part of the guild, but just that I won't be here for a few months every year. Anna Schlemma and I will be workshop chairpersons for now since we have Yukimi Annand, Barbara Mann and Heather Held in the wings for future workshops. I know that Renee and Marty will continue to keep the guild growing.

The MCG Board held a meeting in November and Marty suggested a Year of the Handmade Book. At our November meeting we had several people volunteer to demonstrate handmade books at our monthly meetings. Renee will be doing a Spotlight (a la Kalamazoo) with her book she did for the august 2017 exchange. We will have our regular meeting and then pack a lunch and make a book in the afternoon. Angie West has volunteered to do another Spotlight in June. More information about this will be forthcoming in other emails.

Also at our November meeting, we held a Calligraflea so members could either sell their treasures that are no longer used or could give away free anything they just didn't have use for anymore. Maureen Trubac brought a suitcase full of books and lots of them were scooped up.

We've had a great year of demonstrations and hopefully that will continue throughout the future meetings. That old saying "It Takes A Village" rings true even with calligraphy guilds. Without everyone working together all year, we wouldn't have the marvelous cohesiveness that we have had for many years. Let's continue to keep the Michiana Calligraphy Group strong by continuing to promote the beautiful art of Calligraphy.

Thanks again everyone for your love and support and I look forward to seeing everyone again in March.

Ginny VanderHey
Ex - MCG President

Deep breath and on to 2018!

My deep thanks to Ginny VanderHey and Sharon Esmont for their years of hard work as President and Vice President of MCG.

I cannot begin to imagine what it is like to guide our guild into becoming a strong and more well known entity in our community. As Ginny said earlier in this post, "It Takes A Village". We all need to pitch in and give a hand. Work toward encouraging our fellow artisans in all of their endeavors . There are so many things going on out there and nothing is more discouraging then finding out something wonderful happened last week that we would have loved to be a part of. I am asking all of you, if you hear of a show, class, event, etc. send a message to me or any of our board members and we will make sure the news gets out.

In my calligraphic life I have been taking classes through Acornarts. Harvest Crittenden has added some artists to her studio and I have taken 2 classes with F. Phyllis Macaluso using the wedge brush that most of us have worked with before. Also a class with Bailey Amon Rivera who taught "Script Design from Traditional to Modern". Starting January 3 I will be taking a class with Michael Ward in Spencerian Design. All have been 4 week classes with a lot of handouts and great instruction. I have enjoyed them very much and encourage everyone to look into the classed available at Acornarts.

Requesting that everyone think about submitting an article for the blog. It can be about a certain artist that you enjoy, a technique, a teacher,  a fellow member or even yourself! I expect to be flooded with articles!

September Meeting

Our September meeting was all about Zentangle which Renee Tuveson guided us through some beauties. Renee has been doing a Zentangle a day as often as she can and printed out some new ones for us to try. It was enjoyable to see our shapes come to life with some micron pen strokes. Thanks Renee for showing us some new Zentangles that we can try and the websites so that we can continue to experiment.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS:

Future Workshops - It seems that instructors are booking their workshops way, way out in the future and we have secured two really good calligraphers for our future workshops. Please mark your calendars for May 22 and 23, 2018 (a Tuesday and Wednesday) when Yukimi Annand will be in South Bend for a workshop for the MCG and also Heather Victoria Held for the weekend of  April 6, 2019. Both of these ladies are booked solid and these were their first available dates. Save the dates and save your pennies because these workshops will cost a bit more since we have to fly them from Canada and California. Luckily for us, we will piggy back onto the Chicago Guild's dates for Yukimi Annand so we won't have to pay the whole airline fee. Another guild will be looking at Heather Held's dates to see if they can piggy back onto ours and we can share that cost. I have said many times that we try to keep our fees as low as possible, but when an instructor comes from a distance away, they charge us more for travel and baggage and we pass that on to you. You won't want to miss either of these workshops!

POLICY FOR MCG
Our workshops seem to have people sign up and then decide not to attend. We have been very generous in returning monies paid for the workshop if someone decides not to attend at the last minute, but we are going to have a change in this policy. There will be a nominal fee if you drop out of the workshop. If there would be an emergency, for instance, a birth of a child or grandchild, illness, etc, then the board will take this under advisement to decide on a course of action regarding a refund. Also, if the workshop is filled and there is someone to take your place, that would also qualify for a refund. So please, if you want to sign up for a workshop, make sure that you put that date on your calendar as a commitment. We have a small calligraphy group and we struggle to fill workshops at times. We need all of you to attend as many as possible so that we can continue to have quality instructors.

Are you on Facebook? If so, look up your favorite calligraphers because they are on Facebook also. I like to look at Barbara Close, Reggie Ezell, Julian Waters, John Stevens, Rachel Yallop, Pendragons, Capital City Scribes, Yukimi Annand, etc.. There is a lot of beautiful calligraphy on these pages that will get you inspired. Also look at Joanne Fink and Barbara Lever's Facebook page, and then, there is always Pinterest. Oh my, so many places to be inspired!

PO BOX in SOUTH BEND - Due to lack of much mail at our Post Office box in South Bend, we have suspended any mail sent to that address. If you have anything to send to the MCG, please send to Laurie Heyden, 18292 Courtland Drive, South Bend, IN 46637 or Renee Tuveson, 928 Finch Drive, South Bend, IN 46614. When monies are due for a workshop dues, they will now go to one of these addresses.

COMMENTS FROM OUR CHAIRPERSON
Summer comes and summer goes all too quickly.  I hope everyone had some creative time to write, paint, make books, etc. Again this year, my daughter from Texas comes to Elkhart with my 7 year-old grandson for 5 weeks.  There isn’t a lot of time to make some beautiful letters, but somehow we were able to get some creative juices flowing.  My grandson and I made two books so that he could draw some Legos or Minecraft figures in them.  Pat West spent a couple of days with her granddaughter painting and making jewelry for the Fair in Michigan.  Passing on the things we like to do to family or friends is so enjoyable when we see them smiling at their accomplishments.
For our July meeting, Pat West and I demonstrated nature printing.  Everyone brought such different leaves to paint and print with.  We learned this technique up at Lake Louise last October and it has become such an enhancement to our artwork.

Also at our July meeting, Sharon Esmont, Co-Chairperson and I, Chairperson, announced that we would be resigning as of the November meeting.  Many of you know that my husband and I have a home in Ft. Myers, Florida (which made it through the hurricane with flying colors) and will be spending more time there.  This year we will be leaving in November and not back to Elkhart for a few months, so it is time for someone else to take over the reins of MCG.  Sharon and Jo McPherson will be looking for new officers, so please consider being a leader for a year or two.  Sharon and I have coordinated the meetings and workshops for at least the past 15 years so I am sure that you would love to have some new blood take over.  It has been a pleasure to be with friends every month and to share what artsy thing we are all working on as well as all the demonstrations in which we learned something new every meeting.  Anna Schlemma and I will continue to coordinate the workshops with approval of the board.  After Yukimi Annand 2018 and Heather Held in 2019, it will be time to coordinate a new instructor to lead us to new and exciting art techniques.  We are also working with Barbara Mann on a date for 2018.
One of my favorite meetings of the year is the annual picnic at my home.  Again this year, we were able to enjoy sitting in the screened porch with the gentle breezes blowing in and keeping us cool for the day.  First we had a meeting reminding everyone of what is going on for the rest of the year, and then we had a raffle for the Jacqueline Sullivan workshop in September, which Lauren Matacio won.  Diana Stamper has downsized and moved out of her home and had lots of goodies to raffle off to all of us.  Lastly, we exchanged our handmade books which were spectacular this year.  I think that everyone is stepping up their game and creating beautiful pieces of art.  Next, we were ready to eat! We missed Sharon Esmont’s fruit salad because she was home with strep throat and Jo McPherson’s pear salad because she was not able to join us, but the food choices were wonderful.  Pat West made her “famous” hot chicken salad to start us off; Marty made one of our favorite desserts, the lemon curd cake, Linda Bigger made wonderful black pepper bread, etc.  We loved it all!  Thanks everyone for again making this year’s picnic a success.

 Jacqueline Sullivan by Ginny VanderHey
The Michiana Calligraphy Guild has had Jacqueline Sullivan guide is in workshops several times in the past and each one gets better and better. On September 30 and October 1, Jacqueline was again with the MCG for a "Luscious Layering" workshop at Whispering Pines Community Room in Mishawaka. Jacqueline is a very knowledgeable Golden Products expert and knows her products well including how there is a swath of color over black, hand painted, on the front of each container of paint, so that you know how transparent the color you have chosen will be.
The first day of the workshop was spent stenciling absorbent ground on Strathmore 140# watercolor paper. then painting it with Golden Acrylics mixed with a bit of water and Golden Matte Medium. If there was too much paint, a spray of clear water would move the paint around. We also sprinkled silver or gold powder and scraped pastels onto the wet spots as well as putting cheesecloth and clear plastic wrap on top of juicy spots to texture the paper.
Day two we cut our large sheet of Strathmore into thirds to make into a book. The hard part is deciding which page to use as a cover and which ones to use for the inside pages. We also enhanced our pages with colored pencils, collages, ribbon, high flow acrylics, etc. working toward the end product of a finished book.
The second day was close to being over and we had little time to write inside our books, but, after we are back home and in the quiet of our studio, we can find quotes we want to pit into our books to have a completed project.
The weekend went by so quickly because there was so much to learn and do. Jacqueline gave each of us a folder with lots of information about what we were doing. Each of us came home with a treasure and a masterpiece of work we spent two days creating. Now I have to get back to real life, including a three-day watercolor workshop at Fernwood in Michigan, before I take out my book and start to write in it again. Thank you Jacqueline for leading us through a wonderful weekend learning and creating. I LOVED this workshop!

ANGELA MICHIELUTTI- One of our own members, will be having an exhibit of her work at Ivy Tech State College, 220 Dean Johnson Boulevard, South Bend, Indiana, Room 135, from October 9-27, 2017. Monday thru Thursday 9AM to 9PM. It is free and open to the public. Hope many of us can see Angela's new work at Ivy Tech.

COMMENTS FROM OUR CHAIRPERSON

Summer is here!  Yeah!  This is the time of the year when I can sit outside in the screened porch and read, do art work, water the plants and enjoy the birds singing.  I don’t do any calligraphy out there, but can certainly read my lettering books and think about it!!!
Our April 1 meeting was so much fun.  Barbara Walsh led us in some small bird water coloring.  She has a very light touch with her small brushes and we learned a great deal just watching her.  Thanks Barbara for lending your talent to our guild.

That same afternoon, Sharon Esmont and I went to the Havilah Beardsley House in Elkhart to partner with them during an exhibit called “Can I Have Your Autograph”; Fakes and Forgeries.  There were several historic signatures including presidents, British dignitaries along with Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable.  Sharon and I sat near the entrance and wrote out bookmarks for the incoming visitors.  The kids are the most fun to do a bookmark for.  They love seeing their name written differently and we were happy to talk to them and make them smile.  On Sunday, May 7, Sharon Esmont, Pat and Angie West lettered bookmarks for the Beardsley House.
On Saturday morning, April 8, Renee Tuveson, Pat West, Laura Fuderer and I took the train into Chicago to attend the Chicago Calligraphy Collective Opening Reception.  Linda Bravata, Tina Chronkite and Susan Burton met us on the train in South Bend and we had an enjoyable ride into Millennium Station.  Once off the train, we took a taxi to the Newberry Library.  Next we found a locker to hold our traveling items, like coats we didn’t need, while we perused the exhibit area and the demonstration tables.  The calligraphy was beautiful although I feel that there is less than there has been in the past.  Demonstrations by Tim Botts and Lisa Kivland gave us inspiration of things we can do at home.  Pam Paulsrud gave us a slide presentation regarding her exhibit of Treewhispers in the Middle East which was very informative and interesting.  Pam has been collecting round handmade paper for years with most written on by many calligraphers, children and whomever wanted to participate.  Go to Treewhispers.com if you would like to see what the exhibit is about.  Pam is very passionate about Trees! Lastly, we were there for the Purchase Prize presentation and were very happy to see that our friend and instructor from Kalamazoo, Marijo Carney, was the winner this year.  Her handmade book was only open to two pages, but those two pages gave us an insight to what the rest of her book is inside.  Congratulations to Marijo!

Monica Makielski was at our May meeting and gave us a demonstration on book folding.  Since I wasn’t at this meeting, Laurie Heyden wrote:

We enjoyed learning a fun and relaxing way to make ‘sculptured’ book art using old books.
Monica Makielski, book folding artist, gave a demo today showing us how it is done.
There are two ways to do this: fold or cut and fold.  She had examples of both but showed us the simpler method, folding.
We brought our own book; Monica gave us a pattern and showed us how to make a tulip.
Using a bit of math to figure out where we start the pattern so it is centered, we insert the pattern behind the first page and make two tick marks at each end of the line in the pattern.  We then fold the page 45˚ above and below the tick marks. We continue doing this until the pattern is finished.
Of course we didn’t have time to complete the pattern; we took our book and pattern home to finish our ‘sculpted’ book.
I am looking forward to our next meeting to see who finishes theirs and brings for show & tell.
June 3 was our next meeting where Laurie Heyden gave two demonstrations two different types on book folding.  The second one, an expandable folder, was a little more complex, but with Laurie’s help, we all came home with two new ways to make a book.
Eleven members got together on Saturday, June 10, to make marbled papers.  Angie West led the newbies through a couple of demonstrations and then everyone was on their own choosing colors and marbling papers.  We had a fun day together and came home with beautiful papers.  Now we have to decide what to do with our papers….books, broadsides, etc. The possibilities are endless! Thanks Angie for putting this all together including ordering all the paper and supplies needed.

Since my daughters and their families come to visit during the month of July, I don’t get much art work done, so I get my exchange book for August done early and then I don’t have to stress about it when the kids have taken over my art room to draw, paint, cross stitch and sew.  Hope you can all spend some time working on a handmade book for the August meeting and hopefully it will have some calligraphy in it.  The August meeting is always a fun time, especially the picnic part with all the wonderful food, and, there is always a raffle involved.  Mark your calendar for August 5, 2017. Meeting at 10 and lunch at noon.
PS – Don’t forget that July means “Pay your MCG dues of $15. For the 2017-18 year.

Upcoming workshops:

We have booked Jacqueline Sullivan for our next workshop in the fall of 2017, September 30 and October 1. If you have seen the work that Renee, Anna, Pat and Ginny brought for show and tell from Lake Louise, it will give you an idea of what we will be doing in that workshop.  There will be a maximum of 20 participants.  The cost for this workshop will be $110. for members and $125. for non-members.  Marty Mitchell has secured one of our favorite venues, Whispering Pines, for this workshop which will be held from 9 until 5 on both days.  Laurie Heyden will be accepting cash or check for this workshop at the July meeting.
